Kelly and Holmes Named Co-UMass Athletes Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. - On Monday November 1, 2010 Senior Katie Kelly and junior Tyler Holmes were chosen as Co-UMass Athletes of the Week.

Kelly, a Dedham, Mass. native, recorded four points in the Minutewomen's game against West Chester. She set up two goals for the 3-0 win over the Golden Rams. On Sunday, Kelly finished the regular season by scoring the game-winning goal in the second half of play against La Salle. The final score of the game was 2-1 and the victory led the Minuewomen to finish their regular season with a 7-0 conference record.

Kelly finishes her regular senior season having scored 11 goals and making seven assists.

Holmes, a linebacker from Blacksburg, Va, made 14 tackles in this weekend's game against James Madison. His 10-yard sack helped secure the win on the last drive for JMU. Holmes also had 1.5 TFL. This is Holmes third time this season being named either UMass Athlete of the Week or Co-UMass Athlete of the Week.

This season, Holmes has received a plethora of awards including the CAA Defensive Player of the Week (9/5/10), College Sporting News All Star (9/5/10), and has been named to the 2010 CAA Preseason First Team, among others.

The field hockey team will take on the Temple Owls on Nov. 5 in the first round of Atlantic 10 tournament play in Philadelphia. The football team continues their regular season campaign this weekend at home against Maine.
