BOSTON, Mass. - The UMass men's cross country team put forth a solid effort at the New England Championships on Saturday afternoon, as the team's top five scorers led the way to a 30th place finish among a field of 47 teams. In a week that was aimed at gaining momentum for next weekend's heavily anticipated Chili Pepper Festival, the Minutemen combined to score 771 points.
At the head of the race for UMass was Patrick McAllister who grabbed his first top team finish of the season by crossing the line at 26:08 good enough for 90th overall. Following his lead were the senior and freshman duo of Sonny Gamble and Paul Merriman. Gamble, the 2009 New England Steeple Chase Champion, placed 109th overall in 26:16, while Merriman finished in 26:55, taking 186th overall.
Rounding out the fab five for UMass were Jared Reddy and Andrew Erwin. The two harriers placed 187th and 199th respectively, with times of 26:08 and 26:16.
The Minutemen competed in a full field of 318 competitors in Boston on Saturday in a highly competitive race at Franklin Park. Many of the competitors from UMass have previously ran at Franklin Park while in high school, as the course is known for hosting multiple cross country races throughout the fall.
Coach O'Brien will lead his team to the deep south next weekend, as the squad prepares for the Chili Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The race is set to kick off early, at 9:45 am ET.
