CINCINNATI, Ohio - The UMass women's soccer team shut out the Xavier Musketeers, 3-0, Friday night in Cincinnati. The Minutewomen (5-7-0, 2-1-0 A-10) now lead the all-time series against Xavier, 11-5-1.
The Minutewomen came out of the gates firing, as Sydney Stoll notched the only goal UMass would need in just the 6th minute of play. Stoll was able to finish off two quick passes in the box from Meghan Collins and Ashley Hamel.
Just 11 minutes later at the 16:09 minute mark, Therese Smith was able to bang home the second goal of the game on a corner kick from Meghan Collins. The goal set the tone for the rest of the match, and UMass was able to control the pace until the final whistle.
In the second half of play in the 68th minute, Sydney Stoll tallied her second goal of the match on a feed from the right side of the box by junior Deanna Colarossi.
"It's good to have Sydney back in the lineup," said head coach Ed Matz. "She was able to put pressure on Xavier's defense all night long."
The Minutewomen outshot the Musketeers, 13-5, in the match while UMass had the edge in corners, 8-4. Fouls were 10-5, against UMass.
UMass will hit the pitch again Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1:00 p.m. against Dayton for the team's third A-10 matchup of the season in Ohio.
