Minutewomen Head To ITA Regional This Weekend

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Women's Tennis team begins play in the ITA Regional this weekend hosted by Dartmouth and will compete in singles and doubles matches for both the qualifying and main draw rounds.

Qualifying round matches begin on Friday for both singles and doubles. Senior Candynce Boney will be participating in the singles qualifying draw. Boney is coming off of two single dual match wins against both Fordham and Rhode Island. Participating in the doubles qualifying draw will be the freshman duo of Jessica Podlofsky and Clara Matias.

Main draw competition begins on Saturday and will feature Julia Comas competing in singles. Comas was named the UMass Athlete of the Week in September after going 5-0 at Army on her way to winning the Flight D singles title. Doubles will feature Julia Comas and Candynce Boney as well as Kaitlin Carpenter and Jocelyn Providence. Both pairs were victorious in the Minutewomen's last match where they defeated URI 6-1. Comas and Boney won by a score of (8-5), while Carpenter and Providence won (8-0).

Minutewomen Win Dual Matches Against Fordham and Rhode Island In the dual match opener, the Minutewomen won their season-opening dual match 5-2 over Atlantic 10 foe Fordham at the Mullins Courts October 11. Wins in two of three doubles matches and four singles wins gave UMass the win. Candynce Boney teamed with freshman Jessica Podlofsky to win their doubles match, 8-5, before the senior Boney won her No. 3 singles match in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-1. Kaitlin Carpenter and Jocelyn Providence teamed together for UMass' other doubles win, 8-0 before they each won their singles match. Carpenter completed her perfect day of not dropping a game by winning in No. 5. Singles, 6-0, 6-0. Providence cruised to victory at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Clara Matias won the No. 4 singles match for UMass, 7-6, 7-6.

In the second dual match of the season against Rhode Island on October 13, the Minutewomen swept all three doubles matches to take the doubles point and won five of the six singles matches to cruise to a 6-1 victory at Rhode Island. The doubles team of Candynce Boney and Julia Comas (8-5), Tanisha Hodgson and Jessica Podlofsky (8-6), and Kaitlin Carpenter and Jocelyn Providence (8-0), all were victorious in doubles, giving the Minutewomen the crucial first point of the match. UMass won five out of the six singles matches. Boney won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Clara Matias took two close sets to win at No. 3 singles, 7-6. 7-6 while the senior Carpenter had no trouble at No. 4, winning 6-0. 6-2. Podlofsky and Providence rounded things out with straight-sets wins at No. 5 and No. 6, 6-0, 6-2.

Looking Ahead: The Minutewomen conclude their fall season Nov. 5-7 at the Big Green Invitational hosted by Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H.
