Men's XC Places Eighth Amongst Nationally Ranked

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Saturday morning proved to be a string of luck for the UMass men's cross country team as the squad placed eighth overall in Fayetteville, Ark at the Chili Pepper Festival. The heavily anticipated meet included the likes of national powerhouses and top three finishers, #2 Oklahoma State University, #7 Indiana University, and #6 University of Arkansas. In a field of 50 teams, Ken O'Brien's squad scored 312 points, as seven Minutemen competed in a field of 470 harriers.

The sensational senior and twin duo of Kevin and David Johnson finally made their 2010 debuts on Saturday. In true Johnson fashion, the brother duo placed first and second respectively on the team and 50th and 53rd overall. Kevin led the way crossing the line at 30:54.91, with brother David not far behind at 30:57.23.

Senior domination continued following the Johnsons' success with Andrew Mulvaney and Scott VanderMolen following in 60th and 114th respectively with marks of 31:05.30 and 31:52.85. Daniel Barry rounded out the top five for UMass. The senior harrier crossed the line at 31:58.73, good enough for 121st overall.

The men's cross country squad will take next weekend off before heading to the A-10 Championships in Pennsylvania on October 30. The start time for the meet that represents one of the peaks of the XC season, is set for 9:45 am.
