Tennis Defeats Fordham In Dual Match Opener

AMHERST, Mass. - Led by wins in two of three doubles matches and four wins in singles, the UMass tennis team won its season-opening dual match, 5-2, over Atlantic 10 foe Fordham on Monday at the Mullins Courts. After the Minutewomen won the doubles point, the Rams won the No. 1 and No 2 singles matches, but UMass took the match by claiming the Nos. 3-6 matches.

Candynce Boney teamed with freshman Jessica Podlofsky to win their doubles match, 8-5, before the senior Boney won her No. 3 singles match in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-1.

Kaitlin Carpenter and Jocelyn Providence team together for UMass' other doubles win, 8-0, before they each won their singles match. Carpenter completed her prefect day of not dropping a game by winning in No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Providence cruised to victory at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.

Freshman Clara Matias won the No. 4 singles match for UMass, 7-6, 7-6.

The Minutewomen's singles loses came at No. 1 singles were Julia Comas fell, 5-7, 6-4, 10-5, at No. 2 singles where Yuliana Motyl fell, 6-4, 1-6, 10-6. UMass' lone doubles loss was the team of Comas-Motyl, 9-8 (4).

The Minutewomen return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Kingston, R.I. to take on Rhode Island in a dual match at 2 p.m.
