Day One Successes For Minutewomen Tennis

WEST POINT, N.Y. - With the first day of play coming to a close late Friday night at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational, the Minutewomen are looking strong with players in the main draw quarterfinals of five out of the six draws. All four of the singles players won their first and second round matches to secure a place in the quarterfinals, which will take place on Saturday. In the doubles side of play No. 1 duo of Candynce Boney and Maude Lecluyse, who are seeded fourth, won their first match easily, 8-2, and will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday. After falling in a very close match to Army, 8-6, the No. 2 doubles team of Tanisha Hodgson and Jocelyn Providence went on to win their consolation match earning them a spot in the consolation quarterfinals.
At No. 1 singles sophomore Magdalena Ploch, after having a bye her first round, defeated Katie Haught of West Virginia, 6-0, 6-1. Ploch will face No. 6 seed Mary Wilson (Quinnipiac) in Saturday's quarterfinals.
At No. 2 singles newcomer and freshman Julia Comas (4th seed) made quick work of both of her early round opponents, losing only six games between the two matches. Comas defeated Nakita Austin (St. John's) 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and then went on to defeat Ashley Pilsbury (West Virginia), 6-1, 6-3. Comas will face the winner of Jillian Santos and Lauren Lucido in Saturday's quarterfinals.
After a close first set No. eight seed Kaitlyn Carpenter defeated Rachel McGowen (Duquesne), 7-6(0), 6-3) and then went on to win her second round match against Karina Cordero-Martinez (Seton Hall), 6-1, 6-2. Carpenter will play Demi Iepuras of Bucknell in the third singles main draw quarterfinals.
At. No four singles Chantal Swiszcz also made her way to the main draw quarterfinals defeating opponents Brittany Walters (Siena), 6-1, 7-5 and Taysha Blessington (Long Island), 6-4, 6-2 en route. Swiszcz will face the No. 3 seed, Prerana Appineni from Stony Brook in Saturday's match.
At No. 1 doubles the returning duo of Boney and Lecluyse are off to a great start cruising through their first match against Catanzarita and Parbhu of Pitt, 8-2. The Minutewomen will face Mikhaylova and Zwirbulis of St. Johns in Saturday's quarterfinals.
Play resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and will continue through Sunday afternoon.
