Tennis Opens Season At Eastern Invitational

Amherst, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team will open up the fall season this weekend (Sept. 25-27) at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational hosted by Army. The Minutewomen are one of 30 teams from across the East Coast competing in the tournament. With seven returning players, the Minutewomen are hoping to start the season off strong.

"I look forward to this tournament as a way to see our freshmen compete for the first time and as a way to evaluate where we are at this early stage in our season," Head Coach Judy Dixon said.

Graduating only three players from last year the Minutewomen are confident with their experience and looking for a strong start to the 2009-2010 season. Leading the team are returning No. 1 singles player Magdalena Ploch (10-9 in 2008) and No. 2 singles player Candynce Boney (15-17 in 2008). Senior Maude Lecluyse finished last years season with 13-15 singles record and a winning record (18-14) in doubles.

Coach Judy Dixon is adding four new players to the fall lineup. Sophomore Michelle Bolsvert and freshmen Julia Comas, Jocelyn Providence and Chantal Swiszcz. The Minutewomen are also welcoming a new assistant coach Juancarlos Nunez.

Last year the Minutewomen had an impressive showing at the tournament, winning the No. 2 doubles flight and No. 1 and No. 3 consolation singles.

Lecluyse and teammate Laura Danai swept at No. 2 doubles, defeating the No. 4 seeded team from Columbia of Marlena Hall and Linnae Goswami in the final.

Boney won the first flight consolation bracket, defeating Ira Aleksova, 9-8(3) in the final. Tanisha Hodgson won her consolation bracket at third singles defeating Gabija Gasiuaite (St. John's), 8-2 in the final.
