Stocker Leads Women's XC To Third At Fairfield Invitational

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The UMass women's cross country team opened its 2009 season on Saturday with a third-place finish at the Fairfield Invitational. With 62 points, the Minutewomen came in behind winner UConn (28 points) and second-place Yale (34), while finishing ahead of Fairfield (121 points), New Haven (162 points), Siena (163 points) and Bridgeport (212 points).
Junior co-captain Lauren Stocker was the top finisher for UMass, taking eighth in a field of 89 runners with a time of 19:25. Junior Gina Perno completed the 5k race in 19:31, good for 11th overall and second on the team.
Sophomore Claire Pettit crossed with Perno in 19:31 and was 13th overall, while her classmate Karen Roa followed closely behind in 14th with a time of 19:32.
Redshirt junior co-captain Shiyi Zan rounded out the Minutewomen's top-five as she was 23rd with a time of 20:08.
The Minutewomen will be back in action next Saturday, Sept. 19, when the squad will host a five-way meet, competing against Amherst, Boston College, Maine and Vermont,beginning at 11 a.m.
