AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's cross country team has been chosen to repeat as Atlantic 10 champions, while the women's squad was tabbed seventh in the voting by the league's head coaches, the conference office announced this week.

The Minutemen, who edged out Duquesne, 75-76, to capture the 2008 title, return the bulk of last year's squad. Three of UMass' five scoring finishers are back for 2009, including Jonathan Pierce, who took ninth at the Atlantic 10 championships as a junior to earn All A-10 recognition.

On the women's side, a young UMass squad finished seventh at the 2008 A-10 meet. The Minutewomen return both of their 2008 all-conference performers this fall, Shiyi Zan and Karen Roa, as well as Claire Pettit who placed 48th at the championship last season as a freshman.

Both UMass teams will begin the 2009 cross country season on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Dartmouth Invitational in Hanover, N.H.
