AMHERST, Mass. - UMass swimmers Justin and Ryan Brooks and Trevor Ziegler made up three quarters of the winning Men's Swim Relay team at the 2009 Cape Cod Lifesaving Championships on Tuesday at Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet. Swimming for Barnstable, the three, along with Tim McGrath, pulled out the surprise victory as they battled through the surf to capture first place in the signature swimming event of the competion.
The Cape Cod Lifesaving Championships, held annually as a chance for area lifeguards and rescue personnel to show off their skills and earn bragging rights, was won by Orleans, who edged out National Seashore.
Justin Brooks has had standout career at UMass, winning his third-straight Atlantic 10 championship in the 1650 free in 2009. He heads into his senior year as the only UMass swimmer to ever win that event and holds the conference record with a time of 15:41.72, set in 2008.
Ryan Brooks, Justin's younger brother, just completed his freshman season for Russ Yarworth's Minutemen. The freestyler competed in events from 50 to 800 yards and placed 13th in the 200 at the A-10 Championships. Both Brooks brothers are from Dedham, Mass. and swam for Xaverian High School.
Ziegler, who specializes in back and free, was second team All-Atlantic 10 as a freshman in 2007 and was on two medal-winning relay teams at the conference championships. He was on three winning relay teams at the 2007 Terrier Invitational.
