AMHERST, Mass. - John Fogarty, Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus, at UMass, passed away on Wednesday July 8 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family.
John was a familiar and well-loved presence at Boyden Pool. An avid fitness swimmer, John could be found daily, working hard in Lane 5. He also was a mentor, friend, and supporter of the UMass swimming and diving teams.
John was the "Voice of the UMass Swimming" for the past twenty years as event public address announcer at all of the men's and women's home swim meets. John also tutored many student-athletes over the years to help them progress towards their degrees.
Fogarty and his wife, Charlotte, established the Mark Fogarty Memorial Endowment Fund to benefit the men's swimming program after his son Mark passed away in 1991.
"John was a frequent and welcome visitor to my office and a true friend to the program. His presence will truly be missed," said men's swimming head coach Russ Yarworth.
