Balise & Danai Win Spring Scholar Athlete Awards

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior lacrosse star Tim Balise and tennis standout Laura Danai were honored as the Spring Scholar Athletes at Wednesday's Sports Luncheon. Balise, who was also named the UMass Male Scholar Athlete of the Year at Monday's Senior Banquet, had 31 goals for the Minutemen this season to go along with a 4.0 cumulative GPA as a Psychology major. Danai is majoring in Biology with a 3.84 GPA and leaves UMass as one of the program's most accomplished doubles players in only three seasons in Amherst.

Balise's awards are numerous, both in the classroom and on the lacrosse field. This season, his 36 points and 31 goals were both second best on the team. His five goal effort at Rutgers in the regular season finale propelled the Minutemen to the ECAC Title and their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2006. In the classroom, Balise has won a number of awards highlighted by being named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American last season.

Danai finished an outstanding three seasons at UMass after transferring from Sacred Heart. She finished her UMass career with a 53-30 career doubles record which places her in the top 10 on the program's all-time list. Danai finished her senior season with a 19-12 doubles mark and 14-10 singles record. In the last two seasons, she also posted the team's top winning percentage in singles and doubles and was named the Team's MVP as a junior.
