UMass Track And Field To Host 2009 New England Championships

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Track and Field teams will be hosting the 2009 New England Championships next weekend at the UMass Track and Field Complex. The event will be held on May 8 and 9 and will commence at 10 AM each day. Fans can purchase tickets by calling the UMass Ticket Office at 1-866-UMASS-TIX. Fans who are unable to attend the Championships can still catch the action through live streaming video via UMass All-Access.
Over forty of New England's best teams will travel to Amherst to compete in the two-day event. Last season, UMass' men's and women's squads finished seventh in the Championships.
This is the first time that UMass has ever hosted the New England Championships. Last season, the UMass Track and Field Complex was the site of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships, marking the first time in league history that the championship meet was held in the Northeast. The Track and Field Complex was completed in the fall of 2005, and is one of the finest facilities in New England. It features a nine-lane track, jumping pit, and an additional competition area for throwing events.
The track features a total of six pole vault lanes, four long jump/triple jump pits, and two high jump configurations. The auxiliary throwing area features a javelin runway, a discus/hammer cage and two shot put areas. UMass is also one of only three schools in the country to utilize the Benyon Sports Surfaces BSS 1000 track surface. The BSS 1000 is the optimum training and competition surface, providing an impermeable shock-absorbing cushion.
As one of Massachusetts' most successful programs, the men's and women's cross country and track and field teams have combined to win 12 Atlantic 10 Conference Championships.
