Minutewomen Cruise To Victory, Beating Hofstra 7-0

AMHERST Mass. - The UMass women's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory Saturday against Hofstra University. Due to injuries and ailments the Hofstra Pride were down one player at the start of the match, giving UMass (7-6) the first point. But the team of five played tough and tried to hang in there. The Pride's one win of the day came at No. 1 doubles. The UMass women improve their record to 7-6, Hofstra is 7-4.
Play started at 12:45 p.m. at the Bay Road Tennis Club. Because Hofstra was down a player there were only two doubles matches in play. The No. 1 Hofstra doubles team of senior Stacey Kent and sophomore Lauren Clifton fought hard and earned themselves the win over No 1. Minutewomen Magdalena Ploch and Tanisha Hodgson, 8-6. UMass got the doubles point thanks to the still undefeated (9-0) duo of Maude Lecluyse and Laura Danai who defeated their opponents 8-6.
Singles play was highlighted at No. 1 where freshman Ploch defeated Hofstra's Lauren Clifton in a decisive 6-1, 6-1. Ploch is 8-6 in singles play with four wins held at the No. 1 position. At No. 2 singles Candynce Boney came out strong winning the first set 6-2 and then won due to Hofstra retiring. Lecluyse, at No. 4, dropped only one game en route to her win.
The Minutewomen return to play on Sunday March 8 when they travel to Siena. The Minutewomen's next home match will be played on April 9 outside at the Mullins Courts when they host the University of Rhode Island.
