Sam Koch Awarded NSCAA/NISOA Coach Merit Award

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass Men's Soccer Head Coach Sam Koch has been awarded the NSCAA/NISOA Coach Merit Award, as announced by the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association on Thursday. Koch has led the Minutemen to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons, including a run to the College Cup in 2007. The award is given annually for a coach's contribution to the intercollegiate game and for exemplifying the highest standards of coaching ethics.

The NSCAA was founded in 1941, and has grown into the largest single-sport coaching organization in the United States with over 28,000 members. The NSCAA is dedicated to promoting the game of soccer and the education of its coaches, and runs clinics, seminars and academies throughout the country.

First given in 1982-83, the NSCAA/NISOA Coach Merit Award is presented to a coach who represents the highest ideals of behavior and sportsmanship toward players, coaches and officials both on and off the field. Koch led UMass Soccer to a 10-8-3 overall record this past season, including a 7-1-1 conference record and the Atlantic 10 regular season title. In his 18 years at the helm of UMass Soccer, Koch has compiled a 197-131-32 record.
