Pierce Tabbed UMass Athlete of the Week

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior men's cross country runner Jonathan Pierce was named the UMass Athlete of the Week on Monday after his performance helped the Minutemen to an impressive showing at the Paul Short Invitational last Friday.
Pierce was the top runner for UMass, coming in 37th place out of 386 total runners. By finishing the 8k in 24:27, Pierce helped lead the Minutemen to an eighth place finish out of forty-two teams. Two of the seven teams finishing ahead of the Minutemen are ranked nationally, No. 7 Iona and No. 19 N.C. State, while six of the seven are regionally ranked.
Pierce improved upon his time and placing from the 2008 Paul Short Invitational as he was 68th last season with a time of 24:53.
The UMass Sports Luncheon will be held in room 1009 of the Campus Center on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 12:15. Head football coach Kevin Morris will be speaking along with head hockey coach Don "Toot" Cahoon. Please make note of the room change from the previously scheduled Student Union Ballroom.
