Ploch Upsets 3-Seed, Falls In Quarters At ITA Regionals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After pulling through a tough three-set match on Sunday against 14th seed Annie Houghton of Army, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, Magdalena Ploch continued her success upsetting the No. 3 overall seed from Harvard, Hideko Tachibana, 6-2, 6-2. Going into Monday's round of 16 Tachibana was 12-0 with three tournament titles already this season.
Tachibana, a freshman from Texas, holds wins over Stefanie Nunic of BU, Abbie Probert of Colorado, Elizavet Zaytseva (Winthrop) and Dartmouth's Jesse Adler.
In the quarterfinals Ploch faced the 5th seed, Princeton's Hilary Bartlett. After winning the first set 6-3, Ploch was unable to pull out the second set losing it 7-5. Bartlett won the third set 6-4.
Ploch is now 8-2 for the season, with her only losses coming to Selma Babic of Long Island, 1-6, 6-1, 10-7 and Bartlett. Both of these matches came down to a decisive third set. Ploch went 10-9 in singles as a freshman, her overall UMass record is now 18-11 (.621).
