Ploch Through To Round Of 16 At ITA Regional Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Seeded 17th at the ITA Regional Championships Magdalena Ploch is through to Monday's round of 16. Ploch, who has played No. 1 for the Minutewomen for the past two years, has an impressive 5-1 singles record so far this season. Her only loss came in the first tournament of the season where she lost to Selma Babic of Rhode Island, 1-6, 6-1, 10-7. Doubles team of Candynce Boney and Maude Lecluse dropped out of the tournament after facing the tough Army team.
Seeded 9th Boney and Lecluyse received a bye first round. They faced Kristin Beehler and Annie Houghton in the round of 32 and dropped the match 8-3. There was no consolation play for doubles after the round of 32.
Receiving a bye first round Ploch faced Erin Colton of Army in the round of 64. Ploch won the match at 4-1 when Colton retired due to illness. Ploch faced another Army player in the round of 32, Annie Houghton.
Seeded 14th Houghton was coming off a win against Mollie Anderson of Penn. Houghton plays at the top of the Army lineup and holds the record for most wins at No. 1. As a freshman Houghton earned the Patriot League rookie and player of the year. Then as a sophomore in 2009, she again won the player of the year award. It was a close match, but Ploch with her steadiness and pace was able to come up with the win. After winning the first set 6-4 Ploch dropped the second set 6-0. With the pressure on Ploch fought hard to win the third set 6-2.
Ploch will face No. 3 seed Hideko Tachibana from Harvard in the round of 16 on Monday morning.
The rest of the Minutewomen are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 28 when they will play the rescheduled match against Fordham. The home match will be played at the Mullins Courts, play will begin at 1:00 p.m. Come out and support the Minutewomen.
