BOSTON, Mass. - The UMass men's cross country team took an outstanding second in a field of 47 teams at the New England Championships on Saturday at Franklin Park. With 116 points, the Minutemen topped nationally 16th-ranked Providence, who placed third with 171 points. UMass-Lowell won the meet with 93 points.

Leading UMass, senior Jonathan Pierce continued his success by finishing in fifth place overall and first on the team for a second straight week with a time of 24:42.

Nicolai Naranjo crossed the line almost right after Pierce, taking seventh place overall out of a field of 320, with a time of 24:49. Next up for the Minutemen was junior David Johnson and sophomore Zachary Gordon finishing in 12th and 38th respectively, with times of 25:00 and 25:34.

Rounding out the scoring field for UMass was senior Andrew McCann who placed fifth on the team and 54th overall with a time of 25:46.

The Minutemen will try and carry the momentum into next week's meet when they travel to Terre Haute, Ind. for the ISU Pre-Nationals. The meet is set to kickoff at 11:00 a.m.
