AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's tennis team held their end of the year banquet handing out awards and naming their captains for the upcoming 2008-09 season.
No. 2 doubles and No. 6 singles player Laura Danai recived both the MVP award chosen by the players of the team, and the coach's award for the person that most exemplifies UMass Tennis. Danai finished the season with a 17-11 singles record, the second most wins on the team falling one shy of tying Candynce Boney. She also finished with a 17-12 doubles record winning 16 of those games with partner Maude Lecluyse.
Sophomore Lecluyse was named the most improved player on the team. During her freshman campaign, Lecluyse recorded a 10-18 singles record and a 18-10 doubles record finishing the year off at .500. This season, Lecluyse finished the season with a 8-15 singles record and a 16-11 doubles record. Lecluyse moved up from the No. 3 doubles spot last year to No. 2 this year still playing with Laura Danai.
The other Minutewomen to receive an award on the night was freshman Candynce Boney who received the Rookie of the Year Award. Last year the award was given to Lecluyse. Boney tallied the most singles wins of anyone on the team going 18-10 during her freshman campaign. She also boasted a 24-11 doubles record helping partner Masha Pozar to capture the UMass career doubles record.
Judy Dixon also named the captains for the upcoming 2008-09 season. They are Laura Danai and Lauren MacKay.
The Minutewomen will be back in action next fall.
