AMHERST, Mass. - For the third time this season UMass won a match, 7-0. The Minutewomen (10-9) on the season are riding a five-game winning streak that started with their 7-0 beating of Holy Cross at home. Today's game was senior day for the Minutewomen as it was their last home game. A ceremony was held for the two seniors and captains, Masha Pozar (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Kristin DiPiero (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) before the match. The day was also the first time that the UMass team had competed on the new Mullins Center outdoor tennis courts. The Minutewomen finished their spring season 5-1 at home with the only loss coming against Army.
UMass continued with its strong doubles play taking the doubles point for the first point of the game. Pozar and partner Candynce Boney (Las Vegas, Nev.) kept their six-game doubles win streak going and added to Pozar's career doubles record which now stands at 72 with their 8-5 beating of their No. 1 opponent. Each of the other UMass teams also won their doubles matches. From the No. 2 spot, DiPiero and Tanisha Hodgson (Savaneta, Aruba) won their third doubles match of the year, 8-3, their first from the second flight. And Laura Danai (Holyoke, Mass.) and Maude Lecluyse (Montreal, Canada) easily took their No. 3 doubles match, 8-2 to win eight of their last nine doubles matches.
UMass took each of their singles matches on the day as well. Pozar added to her career singles wins total which now stands at 64, just three shy of the record set by Michele Spiess last season with a toughly fought three-set battle, 6-2, 6-7(4), 10-5. With two regular season matches remaining and the Atlantic 10 tournament approaching, it is possible that Pozar would be able to break that record as well. Danai won her eighth singles match in the last nine meets, 6-1, 6-0.
The Minutewomen are back in action at the University of Rhode Island on Saturday for their last Atlantic 10 match-up before the tournament. The match will begin at 2:00 p.m.
