A-10 Swimming & Diving Academic All-Conference Team Announced

AMHERST, Mass. - As announced by the league, three members of the UMass swimming and diving teams were named to the 2008 Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team. For the women's team, senior Samantha Demty (Seekonk, Mass.) was named, while sophomore Michael Berthaume (Hampden, Mass.) and senior John Weaver (East Longmeadow, Mass.) were named to the men's team.
Duquesne's Melissa Johnson and Brad Byars of Saint Louis were named the Atlantic 10 Student-Athletes of the Year in men's and women's swimming and diving, respectively, in voting conducted among the Conference's sports information directors.
The swimming and diving teams wrapped up the regular season at the end of February with the Atlantic 10 Championships. Overall, the women placed fourth, while the men took home their tenth A-10 title.
This is the second time that captain Samantha Demty has been named to the All-Conference Team. Demty is enrolled in the School of Management and is majoring in accounting. Demty capped off the regular season with an eighth place finish at the A-10 Championships in the 400-year IM with a time of 4:35.01. Demty also placed ninth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.39.
Michael Berthaume is majoring in engineering and anthropology. Berthaume finished off the regular season at the Atlantic 10 Championships by earning the gold medal in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.66.
This is also the second time that captain John Weaver has been named to the All-Conference team. The English major was named to the list last year as a junior. Weaver had his best performances of the season at the Colgate Dual meet where he placed first in the 100 breaststroke and first in the 200 medley relay.
