Army Defeats UMass In Hard Fought Battle, 4-3

AMHERST, Mass. - After winning the first point of the match via doubles play, the Minutewomen succumbed to the Black Knights in singles play only able to win two of the six singles matches. In thirteenth match-up between the two teams, Army used their singles prowess to overcome the early deficit and beat the Minutewomen in their first home match of the spring season in some hard-fought battles. UMass now falls to 3-5 on the season and Army improves their record to 7-2.
No. 3 doubles pair Maude Lecluyse (Montreal, Canada) and Laura Danai (Holyoke, Mass.) finished first in doubles play defeating Army 8-5. The No. 2 doubles pair of Kristin DiPiero (Huntingdon, Pa.) and Tanisha Hodgson (Savaneta, Aruba) faltered as they lost to the Black Knights, 8-4. The first point of the match was down to the No. 1 doubles pair and champion of Army's Eastern Collegiate Invitational Masha Pozar (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Candynce Boney (Las Vegas, Nev), and they did their job as they beat Army, 8-5 to earn the first point of the match.
After the end of the first round of singles, the score stood 3-2 Army as Pozar fell in a tough battle between the No. 1's 7-6 (5), 6-7 (7), 6-0. Both Hodgson and Lecluyse also fell to their Army counterparts in tough matches but it was Boney that downed her Black Knight foe easily with a score of 6-2, 6-2 to put UMass back in the match.
The outcome game depended on Kaitlyn Carpenter (Alburis, Pa.) and Danai as they both would have had to win for UMass to beat Army. Carpenter took down her No. 5 Army foe in the fourth three-set match of the day, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 to tie the score back up at three a-piece, but Army fought back as Danai fell in No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-2.
The Minutewomen return to action on Thursday, February 28 at Boston College at 5:00 p.m.
