UMass Offense Comes Alive In 5-0 Win At Harvard

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - UMass (3-1), led by their highest scoring output in seven years, dominated Harvard (0-1) in a 5-0 victory at Jordan Field on Sunday afternoon. The Minutewomen were led by Cher King (Christ Church, Barbados) with two goals and one assist. Katie Kelly (Dedham, Mass.), Katelyn Orlando (Manchester, Mass.), and Kristina DoRosario (Oakville, Ontario) added a goal apiece for UMass. Sarah Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo.) made eight saves in goal to earn the victory and run her record to 2-0.

It was the most goals scored in a game by UMass since a seasoning-opening 7-0 victory at Colgate on August 30, 2000. That season was also the last time the Minutewomen started a campaign 3-1.

UMass got on the board with 14:20 left in the first half. Freshman back Jaime Bourazeris (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) sent a pass into the circle from the far right that found the stick of King. King then found the open Kelly eight yards in front of the net, who sent a shot into the lower-right corner of the net for her first career goal.

The Minutewomen struck again with 3:26 left in the half on Orlando's first goal of the season. Sophomore Christine Rodgers (Leominster, Mass.) brought the ball down the right side and took two shots on Crimson goaltender Kylie Stone, who stopped both at close range. The rebound went to junior Lauren Gillespie (Casco, Maine), who in turn slid the ball by Stone to a wide open Orlando right at the goal-line.

With 30 seconds left in the first stanza, UMass made it 3-0 when King tallied a goal of her own, blasting a shot from 15 yards out off a feed from sophomore Kylie Jelley (Deerfield, Mass.). It was Jelley's first point in a UMass uniform. It also marked King's third straight game with a goal.

The career-firsts continued for the Minutewomen in the second half. This time it was senior back DoRosario. The Ontario native, and UMass' defensive captain, scored her first career goal, knocking in the rebound of a Bourazeris shot off a penalty corner with 22:53 remaining, giving UMass a 4-0 lead.

The offense continued to roll for UMass when, with 11:37 left, King scored her second goal of the game, beating the new Crimson goalie, Siobhan Connolly, far side on a unassisted rush down the right side. It was King's second career multi-goal game. She scored a pair against La Salle last season. Harvard outshot the Minutewomen 12-8. Shots on goal were even at 8-8. Harvard had seven penalty corners to UMass' two.

Devon Shapiro led the way for the Crimson with five shots, three of which were on goal.

UMass will be back in action this Saturday when they travel Vermont to take on the Catamounts in an 11 a.m. contest.
