Cross Country Teams Announce 2007 Schedule

June 27, 2007 | Men's Cross Country

June 27, 2007

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts cross country teams have released their 2007 schedules as announced by head coaches Ken O'Brien and Julie LaFreniere. The men's and women's teams will host a home meet on Sept. 15. The women's race will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will feature Maine and Vermont, while the men's race will start at 11:45 a.m. with the Minutemen taking on Connecticut, Maine and Vermont.

The season opening meet will be on Sept. 8 when both teams head to Hanover, N.H., to take part in the Dartmouth Invitational.

Following the home meet, UMass will take part in the prestigious Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University. This will be the 34th running of the Paul Short Invitational with over 220 collegiate and high school runners competing in the event last season. The meet regularly draws some of the top collegiate cross country programs in the nation.

The Minutemen and Minutewomen will then take part in the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston on Oct. 6 before heading to the Albany Invitational on Oct. 13.

The New England Championships will feature teams from all divisions in the New England region. The Albany Invitational will be held for the 41st time and field over 25 teams for both the men's and women's races.

Both meets will prove excellent tune-up meets for the Atlantic 10 Championship Race which will be held on Oct. 27 at the Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia. Last season, the Minutemen finished third at the league meet while the Minutewomen took sixth among 14 teams. Rising seniors Nils Fischer (Stow, Mass.) and Christina Derosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) each earned All-Conference honors. For DeRosa, it was her second All-Conference honor for cross country.

The teams will then have a week off before preparing for the NCAA Regional on Nov. 10. The meet will be held at Franklin Park in Boston.

The final regular season meet of the year will be the ECAC/IC4A Championships on Nov. 17 at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City.

The men's cross country team loses just two seniors entering the 2007 season with 19 returning runners. The Minutemen look to be an experienced team this year with five seniors and six juniors on the roster.

The women's team returns 13 runners from last season and features an experience upperclass with five seniors and two juniors. UMass loses just two runners from the 2006 season.
