UMass Track And Field To Compete At A-10 Championships

AMHERST, Mass. - The men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Charlotte, N.C. this saturday to compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships. At the A-10 Championships last season the men took seventh while the women finished eighth. Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) earned second team all-conference honors by finishing second in the 10,000 meters to lead the women to their eighth place finish. DeRosa is coming off a first place finish in the 5000 meter run last weekend. For the men's team, junior Kevin Murphy (Bridgewater, Mass.) has been running strong. He is coming off a first place finish in the 800 meter run at the UMass Eight-Way meet last weekend. Murphy crossed the line in 1:53.04, good for a new facility record. He looks to improve on his 800 meter time of 1:54.92 at last years A-10 Championships.

Along with Murphy, juniors Nathan Barksdale (Valparaiso, Indiana.) and Nils Fischer (Stow, Mass.) return hoping to build on their strong performances from the conference meet last season. Barksdale took eighth in the 400-meter dash in 49.73 seconds while Fischer took sixth in the 5,000 meter run in 14:49.94. Both are coming off impressive performances last weekend at the UMass Eight-Way meet as well. Barksdale took first in the 100 meter dash as well as helping the 4x100 relay team to a first place victory. Fischer competed in the 800 meter run finishing in third place with a time of 3:57.73.

The women's track and field team is coming off a second place finish at the UMass Eight-Way meet. Top performers of the day included Mary Serdakowski (Richmond, R.I.), Christina DeRosa and Holly Heinricher (Foxboro, Mass.) who finished first in the 100 meter hurdles, 5000 meters, and 100 meter dash respectively. The Minutewomen lost a few top performers from last years A-10 Championships, but return DeRosa who earned Atlantic 10 Second-Team All-Conference honors with her silver medal finish in the 10,000 meters. The Minutewomen looks to take their strong performances into the conference meet this Saturday.

The Atlantic 10 Championships will take place in Charlotte, N.C. beginning at 9:30 a.m. The A-10 website (www.atlantic10.com) will provide live statistics and streaming video of the A-10 Championships.
