Track And Field Heads To UConn Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. - After hosting the first track and field meet in 10 years, the UMass men's and women's track and field teams continue their season at the UConn Invitational this Saturday. The men are coming off a second place finish, while the women took fourth overall.
After setting four new facility records and finishing second overall, the Minutemen look to pick up their first win of the outdoor track and field season. Four different Minutemen took first in their respective events including two freshmen, Tyler Cotto (Holliston, Mass.) and Andrew Mulvaney (South Hadley, Mass.) Also winning their events were sophomore Josh Boone (Gardner, Mass.) and junior Kevin Murphy (Bridgewater, Mass.) who took first in the 1500 and 800 meters, respectively. At the UConn Invitational last outdoor season, the men took third overall. Returning to this years UConn Invitational are Nathan Barksdale (Valparaiso, Indiana) and Jesse Regnier (Hampden, Mass.) who recorded very strong performances last year in Storrs, Conn.
A pair of women helped the Minutewomen set two new facility records en route to a fourth place finish overall. Junior Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) and freshman Lisa Wilson (Holden, Mass.) placed first in the 5000 meters and discuss throw, respectively. DeRosa's performance qualified her for ECAC's as she won the 5,000 meters in 17 minutes, 23.97 seconds. At the UConn Invitational last year the Minutewomen took fifth place with DeRosa leading the way by finishing second in the 5,000 meters. The Minutewomen will look to improve on their fourth place finish with continued contributions from several different performers.
The UConn Invitational will be held in Storrs Connecticut and begin at 1:00 P.M.
