East Falmouth's Brian Schmidt Signs NLI With UMass Swimming

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass Men's swimming and diving coach Russ Yarworth announced the signing of Brian Schmidt (East Falmouth, Mass.) to complete the class of 2011. Schmidt joins Max Butler (Duxbury, Mass.), Patrick Kuehne (Hillsborough, N.J.), Julian McKean (Suffern, N.Y.) and Drew Talarick (Skillman, N.J.) who signed during the fall period.
Schmidt is a 6-1, 175 pound swimmer who competed in the 100 yard and 200 yard backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and individual medley for the Cape Cod Swim Club. He holds the Cape Cod Swim Club record times in the 100 yard breastroke (1:00.26) and the 200 yard breastroke (2:09.71).
"Brian is a solid all-around swimmer out of a great club program. His work ethic and academic focus will make an immediate impact on our incoming freshman class," said Yarworth.
In his most recent meet Schmidt placed first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.83), the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.12), the 100-yard butterfly (56.25), and the 200 yard individual medley (2:05.13). His ability to compete in various swim competitions will be a valuable asset for the Minutemen.
Schmidt excelled in and out of the swimming pool. He holds a 3.48 GPA and will finish in the top 20% of his class at Falmouth High School. He plans on majoring in engineering at UMass.
Schmidt swam under the tutelage of Head Coach Marc Solomon, who has helped numerous kids become top swimmers in New England and swim on to the Junior and Senior national level.
He is the son of Craig and Cathy Schmidt.
This past season, UMass won its ninth Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships and sixth in the last seven seasons. Yarworth was named the league's Coach of the Year for the eighth time since UMass joined the conference in 1984-85.
