Friars Earn 3-1 Win Over UMass Hockey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - For Immediate Release: Friday, October 26, 2007 Despite a season-high 32 saves by Paul Dainton, Providence scored goals in each period on Friday night to defeat the UMass hockey team 3-1 at Schneider Arena. The Minutemen fall to 2-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Hockey East, while Providence improves to 1-4-0, 1-1-0 in league play. Kyle Laughlin scored the game-winning goal and added an assist. Matt Burto scored the lone goal for UMass in the second period. The two teams will meet Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
The third period started with a quick flurry of goals. Laughlin's game-winner came just 25 seconds into the period giving the Friars a brief 2-0 lead. Matt Burto tallied his second goal of the season for UMass 16 seconds later to bring the Minutemen back within one.
With 9:31 remaining in the game it appeared as if Chris Davis had tied the game when he poked a shot towards the goal just outside the left post. The play was reviewed for nearly 10 minutes before it was announced a non-goal. Mori gave the Friars an insurance goal with 2:07 remaining in the game on the second power play conversion of the game.
The Friars controlled the game from the outset outshooting UMass 15-to-3 in the first period. The Minutemen fought off four penalties including a game-misconduct for Alex Berry resulting in a five-minute major. Three minutes into that penalty, Cory Quirk was called for delay of game off the face-off resulting in a 5-on-3 advantage for the Friars for almost the final two minutes of the period. Dainton kept the Minutemen in the game making 14 saves.
The opening goal of the game was scored by Greg Collins on the Friars' first power play opportunity just 4:17 into the game.
The two teams played through a scoreless second period that was a bit more balanced than the first. Providence outshot UMass 11-to-8, but did commit the only two penalties of the period. The Minutemen were unable to convert the extra-skater opportunities however.
For the game, the Friars outshot UMass 35-to-21. UMass committed seven penalties for 25 minutes, while PC had six for 12 minutes.
