AMHERST, Mass. - Following an outstanding 2006 season for the UMass women's tennis team, junior Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany) has been ranked 26th overall in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) final rankings for the East Region. Spiess holds the distinction of being the only Atlantic 10 tennis player in the rankings and one of eight collegiate players from the Bay State.
Her final ranking this season is four spots higher than her sophomore season when she finished 30th in the East.
Spiess was honored at the season's conclusion as the Atlantic 10 Performer of the year after posting a 24-4 record in No. 1 singles play and a 21-4 record with Masha Pozar in No. 1 doubles play.
Off the tennis court, the junior also received high praise for her work in the class room being named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District At-Large Second-Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Spiess has maintained a 3.9 GPA in hospitality and tourism managment throughout her time at UMass.
Earlier this spring, she was tabbed the UMass Female Spring Scholar-Athlete and was named to the A-10 All-Conference Team and the A-10 Academic All-Conference Team. This was her second consecutive season being selected to the All-Conference team.
Since Spiess has joined UMass from Louisville, she has enjoyed unparalleled success. She was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week four times and UMass Athlete of the Week two times. Spiess did not lose during the A-10 Championships this season, going 3-0 in singles play and 1-0 in doubles play.
