UMass Defeats Temple 6-1 In Women's Tennnis

South Hadley, Mass. - Sunday afternoon's women's tennis match vs. Temple had a little bit of everything. There was a forfeited doubles match by Temple due to not enough players. There were numerous disputes about scoring. There was even a "super tie-breaker". When it was all said and done, the Minutewomen (9-7 overall, 2-0 A-10) won handily by a score of 6-1.
Since one doubles match was forfeited, UMass needed to win one out of the two matches being played to get the doubles point. It was not easy, but Masha Pozar and Michele Spiess pulled out an 8-6 victory at #1. The duo found themselves up 3-0 before Temple made a run to lead 4-3. Trailing 6-5, it looked like Temple would take the doubles point. Pozar and Spiess made sure it would not happen as they swept the rest of the points to pull out the 8-6 victory.
The success continued for UMass in the singles matches. Susan Johnson put the Minutewomen up 2-0 for the day as she won her No. 3 match quickly 6-1, 6-1. Spiess made it 3-0 as she defeated her opponent at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0.
At No. 4 singles, there was some controversy. A scoring confliction between players led the official to intervene and to replay the point. After losing the first set, Dorothy Iwanowicz capped off a two-hour long marathon match with a "super tie-breaker" win. Stephanie Gimenez and Jana Bartoloni both were able to win at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
The Minutewomen have won their first two Atlantic 10 matches by a combined score of 13-1. They look to continue their success Tuesday afternoon as they travel to face the Fordham Rams at 2:30 pm in the Bronx, N.Y.
