Minutewomen Drop Season Opener To Brown 6-1

PROVIDENCE, RI - The UMass women's tennis team (0-1) dropped its season opener to Brown University (2-1) 6-1 on Wednesday. UMass' lone win came with Michele Spiess defeating Daisy Ames at #1 singles, 6-4, 7-5.
The day started with Spiess and Masha Pozar losing 8-3 to Kelley Kirkpatrick and Ashley Pariser at #1 doubles. Ames and Kara Zeder of Brown posted an 8-2 win in the #2 doubles spot over Sarah Johnson and Dorothy Iwanowicz.
The Minutewomen gained some ground when Stephanie Gimenez and Lauren MacKay won #3 doubles 8-7 over Sara Mansur and Brett Rinkelstein. Brown earned the doubles point winning 2-1.
In singles action, at the #2 spot Pozar took Pariser into a tie-breaking match, 6-4, 2-6 (10-8) only to fall short.
Brown continued dominating winning five straight over the Minutewomen. In #3 action Johnson took on Mansur, 6-4, 6-1. Iwanowicz played with Finkelstein at #4 singles losing, 6-4, 6-0. The #5 spot featured Gimenez and Zeder with Brown coming out on top 6-3, 6-1. Closing out the day Mckay battled with Aleza Baggio at the #6 spot, 6-1, 6-2.
UMass returns to action on Saturday February 11th, when they take on Long Island in a 5:00 p.m. match played at West Point, N.Y.
