PHIADELPHIA - Mardy Collins scored 22 points, and Antywane Robinson added 19 points and nine rebounds as Temple held Massachusetts to a season-low point total in a 76-47 victory Wednesday night.
The victory gave the Owls (12-7, 5-3 Atlantic 10) a measure of revenge for an embarrassing loss at Massachusetts (9-9, 4-4). On Jan. 21, Temple had its lowest point total since 1973 in a 60-34 loss.
On Wednesday, Dionte Christmas hit a 3-pointer with 53 seconds left in the first half and the Owls matched their previous point total against UMass. In that first meeting, the Owls trailed 29-15 at halftime. This time, they led 34-9 after the opening 20 minutes.
Robinson had 11 points in the period and single-handedly outscored the Minutemen.
In the first meeting, the Owls managed only 13 field goals. This time they had 13 at halftime. The Owls shot 5-for-12 from beyond the arc in the first half and 10-for-21 overall. That was quite a difference from the first game, when they hit just two 3-pointers.
Massachusetts had more turnovers (11) than points at halftime. The Minutemen shot 4-for-18 from the floor in the half and missed all eight of their 3-point attempts.
The Owls remained in control in the second half, opening the period with an 8-2 run that extended their lead to 31 points.
With 11:08 left, the Minutemen got within 49-28 on a 3-pointer by James Life, but were unable to get closer.
Life scored 19 points and was the only Massachusetts player in double figures.
