First Two Days At ITA Regionals A Success

HANOVER, N.H. - Two members of the UMass women's tennis are still alive at the ITA Regionals after two days of competition. Co-captains Michele Spiess and Masha Pozar were the only two Minutewomen invited to this prestigious tournament, which features the top players in the East. They have failed to disappoint. On Friday, Pozar won two qualifying matches to advance to the main draw. Saturday, she won in the Round of 128. Spiess received a bye and has not competed in singles action. Pozar and Spiess teamed in doubles play to win two matches and will compete in the Round of 16 on Sunday.
Junior Masha Pozar opened up play with a bang. On Friday, she shut out both of her opponents. She started by defeating Imani Willis of Morgan State 6-0, 6-0. She followed that by defeating Kutherine Arlak of Rutgers 6-0, 6-0. She advanced to the main draw where she defeated Christine Alford of Yale, 6-3, 6-4. Pozar will play Eleanor Peters of Maryland in the Round of 64.
Senior Michele Spiess received a bye and will face Alina Sullivan of Boston College on Sunday.
In doubles action, Spiess and Pozar won two matches to advance to the Round of 16. They started by defeating Anna Khoor and Mary Napier of James Madison, 8-2. They followed that by defeating Amanda Hall and Christina Suarez of Albany, 8-5. Pozar and Spiess move on to face Laura Peterzan and Preethi Makundan of Harvard on Sunday.
