Michele Spiess Wins Flight A Singles Title At Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. -- Junior Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany) defeated Katrina Elder-Bush of Rutgers in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to win the flight A singles title at the Quinnipiac Invitational Sunday. Spiess also teamed up with sophomore Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) to win the flight A doubles title.
Spiess and Pozar beat a pair of their teammates in the final match. They got to the final match by knocking off Gabby Pasternak and Tina Hoang of Quinnipiac, 8-4. They then beat senior Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) and senior Susan Johnson (Arnold, Md.) in the championship match, 8-5. Iwanowicz and Johnson had previously knocked off Elder-Bush and Dana Gordon of Rutgers, 9-7, in the semifinals.
Senior Jana Bartoloni (Quincy, Mass.) was beaten by Rutgers' Dana Gordon in the flight C finals match, 6-4, 6-7 (0-1) and 4-10.
The Minutewomen will now return home to host Connecticut on Wednesday at 2:30 PM. The match will be played at the Upper Boyden Courts on the UMass campus.
