Tennis Duo Sweeps Atlantic 10 Awards

AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany) and freshman Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) were both honored with Atlantic 10 weekly awards this week. Spiess was named the Performer of the Week while Pozar earned Rookie of the Week. Both players went 5-1 overall and this is the third time each player has garnered a conference accolade.
Spiess was 3-0 in singles play at No. 1. Spiess downed her opponent versus Fordham on April 6, 6-4, 6-0 and against Quinnipiac on April 9, 6-2, 6-1. Spiess helped lead the Minutewomen to their first ever victory over Boston University with a 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 win on Saturday. Spiess is 17-3 in singles play.
Pozar was also 3-0 in No. 2 singles play. She defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-1 against Fordham and 6-1, 6-2 versus Quinnipiac. Pozar also earned a victory over BU by scores of 6-1, 6-1 to improve her mark to 13-8 for the season.
Pozar and Spiess teamed up to post a 2-1 record at No. 2 doubles. They defeated both Fordham and Quinnipiac by a score of 8-2. The team is 12-8 overall in doubles play.
The Minutewomen play their final match of the regular season next Monday, April 18, when they host Holy Cross at 3:30 PM at the Upper Boyden Courts. It will be the final home match for senior captain Sasha Edelstein.
