Three UMass Swimmers Earn Weekly Honors

AMHERST, Mass. - Freshmen Nate Bromage (Three Rivers, Mass.) earned his third Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor of the season to pace a trio of UMass award winners following the men's and women's swimming and diving teams' performances at the Brown Invitational and the Rutgers Super Splash Invitational this past weekend. Sophomore diver R.J. Rappe (Farmington, Minn.) and freshman diver Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.) were named the UMass Athletics/Dinn Bros. Co-Athletes of the Week after posting two of the top diving efforts in program history.
Bromage took second in the 100 fly with the third fastest time in UMass history (50.07 seconds), eighth in the 50 freestyle (21.96 seconds), 11th in the 200 fly (1:59.26), and 16th in the 200 free (1:50.33) at the Brown Invitational over the weekend and guided four relay teams to top-four finishes. The weekend was highlighted by Bromage and the 800 freestyle relay taking first, along with the 200 medley relay taking second. Bromage also led the 400 medley relay to a third-place finish and the 200 free relay to a fourth-place finish.
Rappe won the three meter dive on Saturday with 501.70 points at the Rutgers Super Splash Invitational. That total is good for third all-time in UMass diving history and is just 5.20 points below the all-time record of 506.90 points. Also at the Super Splash, Rappe took fifth on the one-meter dive with 272.80 points as the top UMass finisher.
Upperco took third-place on the three-meter dive at the Rutgers Super Splash Invitational with 465.55 points which is good for second all-time in UMass diving history. That total is just 3.05 points shy of the all-time best total. Upperco also finished fifth on the one-meter board with a total of 227.75 points. Earlier this season, she was honored as the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week with her effort against Boston University
Both Rappe and Upperco have qualified for the NCAA Zone A Regional Meet this season which will give them an opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championships.
