AMHERST, Mass. - UMass recorded its second largest margin of victory in the history of the Mullins Center with a 36-point win, 93-57, over Savannah State on Monday night. The total was just shy of the previous high of 39 set on Jan. 22, 2000 against Rhode Island. Six players reached double-figures in the scoring column - the best team effort for UMass since the 1991 season. The Minutemen will have 10-days off before traveling to No. 3 UConn on Dec. 8.
In the well balanced scoring effort, junior guard James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored a team-high 18 points to go along with 3 steals. Junior guard Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) added 15 points, five rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
The Minutemen (2-2) went into the locker room with a 39-24 advantage, extending their lead to as many as 40 points in the second half on three James Life free throws with 3:54 to play in the game.
For the first time all season, six Minutemen reached double-figures in the scoring column for the game lead by Thomas.
Junior Maurice Maxwell (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 13 on 6-of-7 shooting, junior Rashuan Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds for his 21st career double-double, and sophomore Lawrence Carrier (San Bernardino, Calif.) reached double-figures with 11 points for the sixth time in his career. Junior center Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) rounded out the UMass offensive performances with 10 points, three assists and three blocked shots.
For the Tigers (1-4), Javon Randolph scored 17 points and Michael Bennett added seven in the loss.
