Michele Spiess Named Dinn Brothers/UMass Athlete Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. -- Women's tennis junior Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany) was named the Dinn Brothers/UMass Athlete of the Week Monday afternoon. Spiess will be honored at this week's UMass Sports Luncheon Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Noon. The luncheon will be held at the UMAA Tent located just outside the east side of McGuirk Stadium. UMass went 2-0 in dual matches on the week as it beat UConn 7-0 and Middlebury 6-1.
At No. 1 doubles against the Huskies Wednesday afternoon, Spiess and freshman Stephanie Gimenez (Alphaville, Brazil) defeated Christine Burek and BreAnn Cheung, 8-3. At No. 1 singles, Spiess was a 6-0, 6-3 win over Burek.
Against Middlebury on Friday, Spiess downed Amy Roche, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. She and Gimenez also won their doubles match, 8-1.
Spiess is currently 6-0 in singles and 6-0 in doubles on the young fall season. The Minutewomen continue their fall season Monday afternoon with a 4:00 PM match at Amherst College. They will then be at St. John's Wednesday at 1:00 PM.
