AMHERST, Mass. - It has been a busy week for freshman Kristen Bakanowski who was named the ECAC Division I Field Athlete of the Week following her performances at Boston University and Rhode Island.

Bakanowski, a native of Northboro, Mass., tied the UMass pole vault record in just her second collegiate competition as she cleared 12-feet even at the Boston University Quad Meet on Jan. 19. Two days later, she won her third straight pole vault competition to remain undefeated on the season.

Her height of 12-feet tied the school record set by Brandy Green in 2003 and qualified her to compete in the ECAC Championships which will be held March 4-6.

Prior to being named the ECAC Athlete of the Week, Bakanowski was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week and the UMass Athletics/Dinn Bros. Co-Athlete of the Week. She will be honored along with UMass swimmer Justin Zeimetz at the weekly Athletics Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at Noon in Room 1009 of the Campus Center.

The men's and women's track and field teams will return to action this Friday when they travel to the Northeastern Invitational.
