Women's Tennis Has Match Suspended For Darkness

Amherst, Mass. - The UMass women's tennis team had its match suspended with Amherst College Tuesday because of darkness. At the time, the Minutewomen were ahead, 2-0, having won the doubles point and number four singles. The match will be completed next Friday, October 1 on the Upper Boyden Courts.

UMass won at number two doubles, as Sasha Edelstein and Jana Bartoloni defeated Kristen Raverta and Katie Hudson, 9-7, and at number three doubles with Dorothy Iwanowicz and Susan Johnson besting Erin Murphy and Laura Stein, 8-0. Amherst won the number one doubles, as Rachel Holt and Alicia Menezes downed Masha Pozar and Michele Spiess, 8-2.

The only singles match to be completed was won by UMass' Iwanowicz, who beat Hudson, 6-0, 6-3.

UMass led in four of the other five singles matches at the time darkness decended. UMass was up at numbers one, two, and three, while Amherst led at six. At number one, Spiess led Raverta, 6-3, 3-3; At number two, Pozar was in front of Holt, 6-2, 5-5; and Edelstein was ahead of Menezes, 6-4, 3-3. Amherst's lone advantage at number six, where Murphy was up in the third set over Bartoloni 3-0. They had split the first two sets, with Murphy winning 6-2 in the first and Bartoloni taking the second set, 6-3.
