Amherst, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's cross country teams will host their only home meet of the year on Saturday when they compete against Maine and Vermont. The starting line for both meets is at Totman Field. The women's meet starts at 11:30 a.m. and the men's meet follows at 11:45 a.m.
The top runners for the women's team this season are seniors Alexis Anzalone, Amanda Dahlberg, and Tricia Silva; sophomore Cuisle Kierans, transfers Kara Gillette and Erin O'Donnell, and freshmen Christina DeRosa and Kristin Ross. Anzalone was UMass' top finisher in four of seven meets last year.
"The kids are looking good," said women's coach Julie LaFreniere. "They have been working very hard and I'm excited about their attitude. We have a strong chance to beat both Maine and Vermont."
The men's team has a veteran core of five runners. The team is led by senior captains Matt Clark and Andy McCarron. They also have three talented juniors in Ryan Corbett, Sean Corbett, and Paul Noone. O'Brien believes that several of his underclassmen will have a chance to contribute, too.
"Im looking forward to seeing a team with a mix of returning veterans and an infusion of a lot of freshman and sophomore talent," said men's coach Ken O'Brien. "The returnees came back in the best shape I can remember. We'll be a much better team at the end of the year."
Last year's men's meet was extremely close, as Maine edged UMass by just one point.
