"I'm looking for good things even though we are going to be young," said Dixon. "I'm very excited about them and I think we have one of the stronger teams that I've ever had. We're in shape and ready to go this fall."
Heading into the Eastern Collegiate Invitational, it looks like sophomore Michele Speiss (Stuttgart, Germany) will play number one singles. A transfer from Louisville, who played number one for the Cardinals, Speiss, gives the Minutewomen a solid player at the top of the ladder. Another newcomer, freshman Masha Pozar (Ljubljana, Slovenia) will play number two singles.
"I think we're going to have one of the best one-two combinations in the conference," said Dixon.
Team captain Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel), the only senior on the roster, is projected at number three and another returning player, junior Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) is at number four this week. Edelstein went 11-11 last year, including 6-7 at number three last spring. Iwanowicz was 14-7 last season, playing mainly at four or five. Susan Johnson (Annapolis, Md.), a transfer from Colorado, will be at five, while junior Jana Bartoloni (Quincy, Mass.) and freshman Kristin DiPiero (Huntingdon Valley, Penn.)will compete for number six. Bartoloni, was 8-13 last year, primarily at five and six. Junior Lesley Fisher (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and freshman Sarah Jackson (Longmeadow, Mass.) are also on the squad. .
After returning from West Point, the UMass women's tennis team will host Amherst, September 21 at the Upper Boyden Courts. The rest of the fall schedule is September 29 at UConn, October 12 at Williams, and the ITA Regionals in Philadelphia, October 22-26.
