Amherst, Mass. - Coach Ken O'Brien's UMass men's cross country team will open the 2004 season on September 18 at home against Maine and Vermont and he's excited about the returnees and newcomers that will be running for him this year. Last season UMass finished seventh in the Atlantic 10 and 19th out 47 at the New England Championships. This season the Minutemen will be led by a pair of senior captains, Andy McCarron (Lunenburg, Mass.) and Matt Clark (Worcester, Mass.). "Both captains are outstanding students and tremendous team leaders," said O'Brien. "They are two perfect people to lead a young team." In addition to his two seniors, O'Brien is looking for big things from three of his juniors, Ryan Corbett (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Sean Corbett (Highland, N.Y.), and Paul Noone (Worcester, Mass.). Ryan Corbett was UMass top finisher at both the Atlantic 10 and New England Championships last year. O'Brien will have a very deep freshman class with James Dietz (Amherst, Mass.), Ryan Durkin (Andover, Mass.), Nils Fischer (Stow, Mass.), and Matthew Klypka (Oakland, NJ) joining the team this season. "I'm extremely excited about our four freshman recruits," said O'Brien. "This is one our better recruiting classes." Both the men's and women's team will race Maine and Vermont on September 18. The women's race starts at 11:30 a.m. and men's begins at 11:45 a.m. The starting line is at Totman Field on the UMass campus and the race winds its way through an apple orchard. "We're looking forward to a good battle with Maine and Vermont," said O'Brien. "It's a great place to watch a race as the runners will pass the spectators 80 percent of the time."
