CORAL GABLES, Fla. - ACC newcomer Miami hit 13 three-pointers, just two shy of a school-record, as the Hurricanes downed UMass 80-53 on Sunday afternoon. Art Bowers led UMass with 16 points and Anthony Anderson added 12, but it was not enought as the Miami back court was just too much.
The Hurricane guards were led by Guillermo Diaz and Robert Hite who scored 20 and 18 points, respectively. Diaz hit 18 points in the first half.
UMass (3-3) started the game with a trey from Anderson and led after the first five minutes, 8-3.
Miami (5-2) went on a 10-to-0 run highlighted by a Hite three-pointer which gave the Hurricanes the lead for good, 11-8.
The Canes started the second half with a 13-to-2 run and hit nine consecutive shots early in the period.
"Miami played a great game today. When someone shoots the ball that well, it's difficult to win, especially on the road," said head coach Steve Lappas. "They obviously did a good job scouting us. They got open looks in transition early in the game before getting comfortable with their midcourt offense."
"This was a disapointment for us because of the way we lost. Miami's three guards are some of the best you will see anywhere - truly ACC-caliber guards," said Lappas. "We didn't shoot well, particularly in the first half, and I'm a bit concerned with the way we've been shooting the ball."
Fans are reminded to join Lappas, UMass announcer Bob Behler and selected players on Monday night at the UMass Coaches Show on Monday night at La Cuchina di Pinocchios.
The Minutemen will break for the upcoming exam week at UMass before taking on Davidson next Sunday in the Mullins Center. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
A complete recap of the Miami game will be posted shortly.
