Swimming and Diving Teams Ranked In Mid-Major Polls

AMHERST, Mass. - Off to its best start since 1999-2000, the Massachusetts men's swimming and diving team is ranked 11th nationally among mid-major programs according to the CollegeSwimming.com poll following the Minutemen's win over New Hampshire on Saturday. The women's program, posting its best opening record since winning the Atlantic 10 Championship in 2000-01, is ranked 12th in the poll.

The University of Louisiana-Monroe holds the top spot in the men's rankings, while the top women's team is the University of California-Irvine.

Other Atlantic 10 schools in the men's poll include St. Bonaventure (10th), La Salle (13th), and George Washington (18th). In the women's poll, the A-10 is represented by Richmond (9th), La Salle (17th) and George Washington (21st).

The Minutemen entered the 2004-05 season as the A-10's preseason favorite to win the league championships meet. UMass has won four consecutive conference titles, seven overall, to tie Penn State as the only league team to do so. The women's team were ranked fourth in the preseason poll and look to compete for the program's second league title after winning the first in 2000-01.

The rankings are based on each team's best dual meet lineup as judged and submitted by participating teams. Rankings are announced four times throughout the season and entries are due on November 1 (Early Fall), December 6 (Late Fall), January 24 (Winter) , and March 1 (post-conference) although new teams will be added to the rankings between announcements as needed. Teams from the Mid-Major rankings are also eligible for the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division I Poll.

Institutions from the following conferences are eligible for the Mid-Major designation: America East Atlantic 10, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, EISL, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-America, Mid-Continent, Midwest, Mid-eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Sun Belt, Trans America and West Coast.

Both UMass swimming and diving teams will break for two-weeks before competing in the Nutmeg Invitational hosted by Yale on Dec. 4-5 at the RJ Kiphuth Exhibition Pool.
