UMass Falls to No. 19 James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Quarterback Justin Rascati rushed for two touchdowns as No. 19 James Madison beat UMass for the first time since 1997, 28-7. Tailback Raymond Hines had a career-high 123 rushing yards and scored his first touchdown of the season in the win. Rascati completed 11-of-17 for 79 yards.
UMass (2-4 overall, 0-3 in the Atlantic 10) had won the last four meetings with James Madison (4-1, 3-0).
UMass quarterback Tim Day posted huge numbers as he completed 28-of-52 passes for 213 yards. His completion total tied for the third most in school history while the attempts tied for the second-most in a single game at UMass.
Rascati made a criss-crossing run from the left to right of the field on his second touchdown of the day and vaulted across the goal line with just over 12 minutes left in the game.
James Madison broke the scoreless tie as Rascati dove over the offensive line from one yard out to put the Dukes on top 7-0 with 4:01 left in the third quarter. The drive was keyed by a 61-yard dash down the right sideline by Raymond Hines.
Hines ran in from nine-yard out with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter.
UMass finally broke the shutout as tight end Mike Douglas caught his second touchdown of the season on a two-yard pass from Tim Day with about four minutes left.
Maurice Fenner added a late score for JMU.
In a tough defensive first half, UMass and James Madison battled to a 30 scoreless minutes. James Madison had the best scoring chance but quarterback Justin Rascati was intercepted by Tracy Belton with 5:52 left in the first quarter. The interception was made possible by a sensational deflection by R.J. Cobbs as the pass was intended for a JMU's Raymond Hines.
UMass had a chance to dent the scoreboard but Matt Goldstein's 24-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Rodney McCarter with 10:28 left in the first half.
The Minutemen's defense was stellar all half. After punting from their own four-yard line giving James Madison field position at the UMass 46-yard line, the Minutemen posted three consecutive sacks by Serge Tikum, Greg Scott and Ola Sanusi, forcing the Duke back to their own 41-yard line and a punt which led to the end of the scoreless half. James Madison was limited to just 88 total yards in the first half.
