BOSTON - A.J. Brooks ran for a school freshman-record 160 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Boston College past Division I-AA Massachusetts 29-7 Saturday.

BC (4-1) has beaten rival UMass (2-3) five consecutive times since 1978, and it rebounded from last week's loss to Wake Forest.

Brooks, who had 23 carries, scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter and a 49-yarder in the fourth. Paul Peterson completed 16 of 30 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw three interceptions.

Shannon James intercepted Peterson twice, the first setting up UMass' only score. The only other star for the Minutemen was Christian Koegel, who punted a career-high 12 times for a school-record 526 yards.

UMass hasn't beaten a Division I-A team since 1984.

Brooks broke a BC freshman record set just a few weeks ago, when L.V. Whitworth gained 129 yards on 21 carries in the season opener at Ball State before injuring his knee. In Week 2, Andre Callender rushed for 117 yards against Penn State.

Brooks gained 95 yards last week; on Saturday, he had 97 yards on 17 carries in the first three quarters. Whitworth added 72 yards on 15 carries before sitting out the fourth quarter.

Only seven Boston College freshmen have topped 100 yards rushing in a game.

BC faced little opposition on its first drive, needing only one third down to march 62 yards on eight plays. After forcing Koegel to punt, the Eagles made it 10-0 on their second drive with Ryan Ohliger's 27-yard field goal.

UMass stayed close thanks to James, who picked Peterson off at the UMass 37 and ran it back 47 yards to the BC 16. After a UMass holding penalty, Tim Day hit Brandon London for 23 yards; London was pushed out at the 1.

Day tried two quarterback sneaks, getting in on the second to make it 10-7.

Ohliger made two field goals in the second quarter sandwiched around Peterson's 35-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Challenger that made it 23-7 at halftime.
