UMass Ski Teams Open Season Strong With Wins

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts ski teams opened the 2004 season with a strong showing at the UMass Carnival held at Berkshire East in Charlemont, Mass., over the weekend, as the women placed first out of 10 teams, while the men placed fifth out of 10 teams. Individually, UMass garnered a first-place finish in the slalom from freshman Ashley Maxfield (Craftsbury Common, Vt.) while classmate Rush Hawkins (Shelbourne, Mass.) won the Giant Slalom.
On the men's side, UMass placed fifth as a team in the Slalom with 344.45 points and placed fourth in the Giant Slalom with 460.59 points. Individually in the Giant Slalom, freshman Rush Hawkins (Shelbourne, Mass.) won the event with a two-run of 1:26.65 including a blistering 41.27 mark on his second run of the afternoon, the top run of the day. Senior captain David Pomeroy (Winthrop, Mass.) placed sixth with a time of 1:29. 35 while sophomore Marc Epstein (Carlisle, Mass.) placed eighth with a time of 1:29.35 to round out a UMass effort which saw three skiers in the top eight out of 68 competitors.
Individually in the men's Slalom, Pomeroy turned in the best UMass time of the afternoon with a 1:05.58 showing placing him eighth overall out of 72 competitors.
The UMass men's ski teams return to action this weekend, Jan. 24th and 25th as they travel to Waterville Valley, N.H. for the Plymouth State Carnival.
